The Official Receiver is a government official employed by the Insolvency Service, an executive agency of the Department of Trade and Industry.

He acts as a liquidator or trustee in bankruptcy following a court order, e.g. a compulsory winding up order or a bankruptcy order.

Where there are assets, usually a meeting will be held to enable the creditors to elect an outside liquidator or trustee in bankruptcy to replace the Official Receiver.
